Handlery Union Square Hotel History
In 1948, rooms at the Stewart Hotel on Geary Street went for $4.00
a night and many a guest had to share bathrooms at the end of the
hall.
In August of that year our founder, Harry Handlery, purchased it
and began renovations, converting three small rooms into two large
rooms with private baths.
In 1964 Harry's son, Paul Handlery, built the Handlery Motor Inn
on O'Farrell Street with a beautiful courtyard, featuring San Francisco's
first downtown, outdoor heated swimming pool.
In 1987, Harry's grandson, Jon Handlery, officially combined the
two properties into the Handlery Union Square Hotel. As part of
a full back-to-back $10 million renovation directly behind the Hotel
Stewart, he connected the two hotels via the courtyard.
Today, the 377-room hotel's day-to-day operations are overseen by
the third generation of Handlery -- Jon Handlery, Senior Vice President
and General Manager.
